The Ministry of Industry and Technology published “Elevator Sector Report 2021,” which includes information, data and considerations about the elevator and escalator industry.
Due to COVID-19 pandemic all around the country and the world, a report estimated a downward rate in commercial activities and stated that industry maintains its activities despite negative impacts on such factors as employment, supply, transportation, financing and performance.
The number of new elevator installations decreased in our country, especially during the first period of the outbreak, due to a slowdown in the construction sector as well as pauses in existing constructions. Despite capacity reduction and shrinkage in domestic and foreign markets, component manufacturers weathered the storm, as they did not experience great changes in their export-based volumes and thanks to their strong financial backgrounds.
As the maintenance, repair and service companies had the chance to continue their operations during the outbreak and maintenance, part replacement and modernization activities were important in terms of maintaining the sustainability of vertical transportation. These companies were not negatively affected from this period.
A certain amount of increase has been observed in export rates in September, October and November 2020. The report did not include any information about the impacts of increase in raw material prices and global freight costs.
Export Volumes Increase Continuously
Considering total import and export data for the year 2020, export volume of the elevator industry was 245.5 million dollars while import volume was 112.5 million dollars, for a total foreign trade volume of approximately 358 million dollars.
According to these figures, the sector has an export surplus of approximately 113 million dollars. When these figures are analyzed as a whole, it is evident that domestic installers still prefer imported elevator components and parts, although we have sufficient domestic production capacity and supply.
The Number of Elevators Installed in Turkey Is Over 800 Thousand
In Turkey, more than 800 thousand elevators have been installed and commissioned, and a majority of these elevators, including the existing and newly installed ones, are still being used. It is stated that while the number of new elevators installed between 2013 and 2018 increased, it declined in 2019 and 2020 due to the setbacks in construction sectors because of pandemic and economic problems.
40% of the Elevators Received Red Label in 2020
Considering elevator periodic control results for the years between 2012 and 2020, control periods during this time, which started on January 1, 2012, and complete its 10th year in 2022, the number of inspected elevators and elevators that received green labels showed a considerable increase.
In 2020, 592.230 elevators were inspected, and 235.968 elevators (40%) received red labels, 48. 802 elevators (8%) received yellow labels, 205.673 elevators (35%) received blue labels, and 101.787 elevators (17%) received green label.
The Number of Workplaces and Employment
