Hotel Intercontinental

Accessibility Systems

Location: New York City

Submitted by: Douglas W. Boydston

Project Description

The developer of this property was required to provide accessibility upgrades to the existing 44th and 8th streets subway entrance, which was partially underneath the corner of the tower it was going to construct for Hotel Intercontinental. The accessibility challenge could not be overcome by using one commercial elevator, due to existing site conditions. Thus, it took two pieces of equipment to achieve full accessibility.

The keyless vertical platform lift installed is one of the first in an active New York City subway station. There was limited overhead and maneuvering space to approach the lift, and the pit could only be 2 inches deep. A cantilevered, twin-screw, direct-drive system was able to be beefed up to meet the demanding specification for this project, which included a 10,000-cycle test under full load.
