I am really pleased to be penning the introduction to this edition, as we have a number of authors who have not published with us previously. It is great to see new authors, and I would ask anyone considering writing an article for ELEVATOR WORLD UK to contact us if you feel you need assistance. I assure you we are quite a friendly bunch and happy to help.
The focus for this edition is on emerging technology. There are five very different articles on the subject covering the Internet of Things, vocal suites, smart devices in the lift car, remote monitoring and technology ahead.
Obviously, we have our regular columnists covering their usual topics, but we also have articles on history, escalators and special applications, as well as articles covering lifts and COVID-19.
It wouldn’t be appropriate to list all of our authors’ articles here, but my thanks go out to all of them, and I will mention just a few.
There is an article by Kaija Wilkinson about the chimney lift currently being installed at the former Battersea Power Station site. I am sure that such a special project will be of interest to many, and I am very much looking forward to an invite to have a look at it onsite (hint!).
Craig Brown’s article on special applications also caught my eye, as there are a couple of projects in there that I was personally involved with and they bring back many great memories.
The new 2020 CIBSE Guide D gets introduced by Adam Scott, as well. I am sure many will agree with me that this book, now in its fifth incarnation, is the go-to tome for our industry. I am pleased to have been involved with four editions, and it is such a rewarding project in which to be involved. I must make mention of Dr. Gina Barney and Ken Butcher in this respect, as without their incredible dedication, the book would never be.
I would also like to bring readers’ attention to a couple of areas of interest with respect to knowledge in our industry. Firstly, some people may not be aware that the Lift & Escalator Symposium papers can be found at liftsymposium.org/resources. In addition, the CIBSE Lifts Group have posted some training videos on their website, which can be found at www.cibse.org/lifts-group/learning-portal.
Before I sign off, I would also like to draw attention to the Lift Industry Charity website: liftindustrycharity.co.uk/. It is your charity, and since it was formed in 2007, it has assisted numerous families after accidents in our industry. The charity is holding a fund-raising event in July in the form of a bike ride. Please support it if you can by either entering or sponsoring one of the riders who can be found at the JustGiving website listed above.
All the best for now, and see you again for edition 108.
