Florida Elevator Code Compliance Deadline Approaches

TK Elevator (TKE) is among companies to announce an update to Florida’s building code. Per the State of Florida Elevator Code, all elevators must comply with part 3.10.12 of ASME A17/3-2015, Safety Code for Existing Elevators and Escalators by December 31. The code update takes full effect on the first day of 2024 and will ensure that all elevators are equipped with a hoistway door-lock monitoring (DLM) system. The system guarantees that an elevator will remain locked until the cab doors have securely shut, reducing the risk that an elevator could move with its cab doors fully or partially open. The DLM system was first made a code requirement for any elevator built after the year 2000. Elevators built prior to the update must be modernized by January 1, 2024, and those built shortly after the new millennium may need software or hardware updates. TKE notes that there have been many cases of new elevators having the DLM system installed but not enabled, and encourages all property owners and managers to prioritize code compliance.
