“Slender, Gritty, Robust” Tower For Southwest London

Pencil, planned along the River Thames in Southwest London; rendering by Sergison Bates Architects

A super-thin, 20-story residential tower known as Pencil is planned on Garrett Street along the River Thames in Wandsworth, Southwest London, Architects’ Journal reports. The 13-m-wide block on which Pencil is set to rise currently houses a car park and is next to a 1930s structure that once housed a paint factory but was converted into workshops and residences for Baylight Properties, the developer behind Pencil. Sergison Bates Architects handled Pencil’s design, with an eye toward integrating a “slender, gritty and robust sentinel” into an inner-city former brownfield populated by repurposed industrial buildings and an array of new towers. On the drawing board are 27 flats, a café and an extension of a riverwalk. Although approved by the Wandsworth Council, a construction timeline was not provided.
