Two New Outdoor Escalators Planned In Calpe, Spain

Officials in Calpe, Spain, plan to spend nearly EUR1 million (US$1.12 million) to install two new outdoor escalators, Murcia Today reported in December. The project calls for the units in Avenida Gabriel Miró, in the commercial heart of the city, and at Avenida Masnou. Pilar Cabrera, councilor for Culture and Revitalization of Calpe’s Old Town, said the escalators “will be placed in the steepest sections of Gabriel Miró and Masnou” to improve access for older residents, product purchasers and people with interest in historic sites at Casa de Cultura and the Civic Center. Still, the plan was met with complaints from some residents who claim earlier installations “worked very poorly at the beginning” or have not “solved structural mobility in the town.” Mayor Ana Sala, however, said early problems were solved, and the town’s outdoor escalators have become “a complete success.”
