Schmersal Italy selected a lift emergency-call system from 2N Telekomunikace a.s. for lifts and escalators on the A and B lines of the Rome Metro. The oldest underground train network in Italy, the Rome Metro opened in 1955. When it was time to upgrade all 24 lifts and 10 escalators serving the A and B lines, Schmersal Italy was tapped to install a modular emergency call system. Schmersal Italy, in turn, chose a 2N system that needs only a two-wire bus, eliminating the need to install new cabling. The solution also uses Voice over Internet Protocol, or VoIP, technology for transmitting calls from the lift cabin, guaranteeing high-quality sound transmission. The system comes with its own surveillance application and call center for management of emergency lift communications, including alarms and control calls. 2N Lift Sales Director Pavel Kotek observed the system also provides options for further communication interfaces and technologies that can be added without having to replace the whole system. For example, he said, the Rome Metro could easily add an IP camera for emergency calls.
