BMC, IR Team Up To Secure Exposed Elevator Pit in India

Brihanmumbai Metro Corp. (BMC) and Indian Railways (IR) teamed up to secure an exposed lift pit in Mulund, a northeast suburban of Mumbai, India, within 24 h of the publication mid-day reporting on residents’ concerns, mid-day reported on June 17. With the open pit, which had sat idle for nearly a year, turning into a garbage dump and monsoon season upon the area, residents feared the spread of disease, as well as people accidentally falling into the pit. BMC workers cleaned the pit, and IR closed it and barricaded it on all sides. The pit is for an elevator that will serve a foot overbridge (FOB) that is due for an overhaul. Work being stalled on the FOB resulted in the elevator pit construction site sitting idle. Mumbai Rail Vikas Corp. told the source FOB renovation work will start “at the earliest.”
