Elevator Work Progressing at Staten Island Railway Station

Accessibility upgrades coming to the New Dorp station of the Staten Island Railway (SIR) are expected to be completed in the third quarter of 2023 with elevators online by the end of September, Staten Island Advance/SILive.com reports. In December 2020, the Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) announced a project to install 17 new elevators at eight stations throughout the five boroughs, including two at the New Dorp SIR station. The installation of the steel towers, motors and fire alarms for both the northbound and southbound elevators is complete, according to MTA, with additional work to include cab installation for both elevators, installation of the elevator monitoring system and platform edge work. In addition to these upgrades, MTA announced in February that 17 stations across the city are scheduled to receive contracts this year for accessibility upgrades, including an elevator at the Huguenot station. The projects are part of a larger US$5.2 billion initiative to improve accessibility at 67 NYC Transit and SIR stations — part of the agency’s effort to ensure that customers are never more than two stops from an accessible station.
