In Memoriam: Ed Chmielewski
Ed Chmielewski, an elevator industry veteran and Chicago native who served a term as president of the National Association of Elevator Contractors (NAEC) and on the Board of the Elevator Escalator Safety Foundation, passed away on May 1 in Ludington, Michigan, at age 89 with his beloved wife, Barbara, by his side. A licensed elevator inspector, journeyman and former elevator business owner, his nearly 40-year career included 28 years as operations manager at Anderson Elevator of Broadview, Illinois. In 2006, he presided over the 57th Annual NAEC Convention & Exposition in Florida and gave a state-of-the-association address at the NAEC Educational Conference in California that year, noting he was pleased about NAEC being so well respected worldwide. A proud member of the International Union of Elevator Constructors, Chmielewski retired in 1990 to begin life anew in Ludington, where he and Barbara raised a plethora of animals, including more than 45 llamas. Chmielewski will be “fondly remembered as a good man who left this world a better place,” his obituary reads. “He will be missed.”
