Indian Railways Has Made Nearly 500 Stations Accessible

As part of Sugamya Bharat Abhiyan (Accessible India Campaign), Indian Railways (IR) has made 497 stations handicapped-accessible by providing lifts and escalators, Orissa Diary reports. In line with policy, IR prioritizes escalators at heavily trafficked stations in state capitals and cities with populations of at least one million. Installation of lifts is dictated by footfall and space constraints. As of August, IR has provided 1,090 escalators at 339 stations and 981 lifts at 400 stations. In 2022-23, at least 46 escalators and 41 lifts are planned.
