NEII Provides Code Development Updates

The National Elevator Industry, Inc. (NEII) recently provided updates on various American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME), Canadian Standards Association (CSA), International Code Council (ICC) and National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) code developments. They include American National Standards Institute (ANSI) giving final approval for the 2022 edition of ASME A17/CSA B44 Safety Code for Elevators and Escalators. The 2022 edition is set to become effective six months from the publication date, expected in the second quarter of this year. Updates include requirements for new technologies covering cybersecurity and personnel safety , as well as several for maintenance, inspection and testing. All changes for the ICC International Building Code Series (I-Codes) are complete, with publication expected later this year. Proposed revisions for the next cycle of ICC A117.1 Standard for Accessible and Usable Buildings and Facilities are being reviewed virtually every two weeks by the A117 committee, which aims to complete work for publication by the end of 2023. All changes for the NFPA 70 National Electric Code 2023 edition (now available from NFPA) and NFPA 101 Lift Safety Code and NFPA 5000 Building and Construction and Safety Code 2024 editions have been completed.
