Otis’ Spain factories recently achieved significant sustainability certifications, Otis announced on August 7: The facility in San Sebastian became the first factory in Spain to obtain LEED® Platinum® certification; all three manufacturing centers in Spain — in Madrid, San Sebastian and Vigo — received “Zero Waste” certification. Inaugurated one year ago, the 17,000-m2 San Sebastian factory incorporates features such as thermal insulation, the use of natural light and solar panels. It is built with sustainable materials and runs on 100% renewable energy. The Vigo factory just completed installation of 432 rooftop solar photovoltaic panels, expected to reduce annual electricity consumption by 30%. All of Otis’ Spain factories now have solar photovoltaic panels, and all remaining energy purchased for these factories is 100% green, coming from renewable sources. Otis Executive Director of Manufacturing for Europe, the Middle East and Africa Rosa Querejeta said the certifications “are a recognition of our efforts to do well while doing good.”
