Pittsfield City Hall Elevator Being Renovated
The elevator at the Pittsfield City Hall in Massachusetts is getting a US$100,000 renovation to become Americans with Disabilities Act-compliant and receive fire code upgrades, iBerkshires.com reported in June. The building was built in 1832, and the elevator will receive many upgrades, including new controllers, smoke and fire detectors, wheelchair accessibility modifications on the doors, instructions in Braille and lowered accessible buttons. United Elevator Co. in Marshfield is doing the elevator work. During the renovation, City Hall will remain open to the public. The stairs will be the only way to reach the second floor and City Hall employees will help accommodate visitors who can’t use the stairs. Michael Dean, office manager for the Building and Grounds Maintenance Department, said the intent is to get all elevators in municipal buildings and in the Pittsfield Public Schools renovated, but money is an issue.
