U.K.-based architecture firm SimpsonHaugh has drawn up plans for a 71-story tower, which is set to become the city’s tallest structure if approved — reaching 213 m above ground — within Manchester, U.K.’s growing Great Jackson Street cluster, Architects’ Journal reports. The skyscraper will be one of a five-building set designed to provide 2,388 homes across two plots of the city-center neighborhood. Backed by developer Renaker, the scheme would see four towers built at each corner of a new public square at the heart of a section of the Great Jackson Street masterplan known as Crown Street Phase 3. This quartet of buildings would be a mix of 47 and 51 stories. The 71-story tower would sit to the south of this development and include 642 apartments, as well as a sky pool, a top-floor restaurant with views over Manchester, a yoga studio, a lounge, co-working space and a gym. Public consultation documents released by Renaker describe how the massing of the 71-story tower takes “inspiration from a lighthouse” and beckons people entering the city from the south. A full planning application is expected to be submitted for the latest SimpsonHaugh proposals within weeks.
