Seattle, Washington’s Space Needle has begun a four-year effort to modernize its three iconic golden elevators, KIRO 7 was among outlets to report. Following a year-long building modification process, which will take place overnight so the Space Needle can remain open, one elevator will be replaced per year by Otis. The company installed the original elevators in the early 1960s and has maintained the units ever since. The elevator modernization is part of the Century Project, an ongoing, privately funded preservation and renovation effort. Otis will provide custom-designed cabs and updated technology such as Compass 360ā„¢ destination dispatch. Installation of the first new elevator will begin in September 2024 and be complete in May 2025.
