Dutch architectural practice UNStudio was unanimously selected as the first-prize winner of a competition to design a mixed-use development in Düsseldorf, Germany. The decision followed a two-phase contest and public presentation of final designs. The “New Heart” development is slated for Hans-Böckler-Strasse 37-39, located on the Kennedydamm. The 10,000-m2 building site will be home to two slender high-rises, the tallest of which will rise 120 m. The towers surround a low-rise community center that will house medical facilities, a daycare center and co-working spaces. CO2-saving sustainability measures include photovoltaic surfaces, geothermal energy and a charging infrastructure for electric vehicles. The jury, which included developer Die Developer and the state capital of Düsseldorf, called UNStudio’s design “architecturally outstanding and identity-forming.”
