Community leaders in eastern Brooklyn, NY, want more local workers and firms hired for the revitalization of the NYC Metropolitan Transportation Authority’s (MTA) Broadway Junction subway complex, a US$400-million accessibility project that includes seven new elevators and replacement of three escalators, بيكس 11 reports. At a July 23 rally, local leaders said only about 12 of the project’s estimated 170 workers are from nearby neighborhoods including Ocean Hill, Brownsville, Bushwick and East New York. The MTA did not confirm the number of local workers at Broadway Junction, but said a pilot program aims to achieve a local workforce of approximately 20% on designated projects. The Broadway Junction project is expected to be complete by the end of 2027. The megaproject, an MTA spokesperson said, “will modernize and make this complex fully accessible, improving the quality of life for riders while supporting the neighborhood’s economic growth and revitalization.”
