The NYC Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) tells ELEVATOR WORLD Chicago-based Mid-American Elevator provided two elevators for accessibility projects at St. Albans Long Island Railroad (LIRR) station and Auburndale LIRR stations, both in Queens, NY. Mid-American worked with a joint venture of Citnalta/Scalamandre and Parsons Transportation Group on the projects, made possible by support from the Federal Transportation Administration to make the stations compliant with the American with Disabilities Act. "Modernized elevators and station enhancements improve the customer experience and ensures everyone can use our system," LIRR President Rob Free said, adding that the LIRR is now more than 90% accessible. Work at St. Albans included a new elevator machines rooms, a reconstructed tunnel, new sidewalks, new guardrails and more. At Auburndale, crews were able to utilize the existing elevator shaft and only needed to replace the elevator equipment and components. MTA Construction and Development President Jamie Torres-Springer said innovative contracting methods like project bundling and design-build have resulted in the authority delivering upgrades "better, faster and cheaper than ever before."
