Two five-story, Soviet-era apartment buildings in the Estonian capital of Tallinn are set to get new elevators as part of the city's SOFTacademy project, in which property upgrades are financed by residents, loans and project-based support, ERR reports. The EUR832,000 (US$964,005) project includes four elevators, new stairwells added to the fronts of each building and elevator shafts to replace existing staircases. This configuration (versus adding exterior elevator shafts) ensures better access since residents will be able to reach elevators "right from their apartment level" rather than only at landings between floors, a Tallinn University of Technology professor said. Construction could begin by the spring, with the elevators operational in August 2027.
