The Australian Building Codes Board published an official preview of National Construction Code (NCC) 2025 on February 1, with state and territory governments to consider adoption — on their own timelines — starting May 1, the Lift Engineering Society of Australia recently noted. Reflecting public consultation and expert technical review, the preview includes several updates aimed at improving safety, performance and usability across the built environment. For lifts, Part E3D7 of NCC 2025, "Passenger Lift Types and Their Limitations," states, “In an accessible building, every passenger lift must be one of several specific lift types, subject to the limitations, if any, of each lift type.” NCC 2025 also removed a paragraph pertaining to certain small-sized, low-speed automatic lifts, meaning AS1735.16 lifts will not be acceptable.
