An escalator at the Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority (MBTA) Davis Station in the Boston suburb of Somerville on which a man’s clothing became entrapped and the man later died earlier this year saw a second, similar incident on July 31, outlets including Boston.com report. In the recent incident, a woman fell on the escalator and suffered a hand injury when her clothing became caught in the machinery. A fellow rider hit the emergency-stop button, an action praised by MBTA. “In the event of an emergency, any member of the public can stop an escalator by pressing the red button labeled ‘STOP’ at the top and bottom of each escalator,” an Authority spokesperson said. In the first incident, the man fell at the bottom of the escalator in the early morning on February 27, his clothing becoming caught, wrapping around his neck and restricting his airway. He was hospitalized, but died on March 9. In that case, it took more than 20 min. for someone — an MBTA employee — to help the man and bring the escalator to a stop.
