Jaume Collboni, Barselona Belediye Başkanı, İspanya açıkladı on January 28 the city will replace 37 public vertical-transportation (VT) units — 24 escalators and 13 lifts — to enhance accessibility in 28 neighborhoods, part of a EUR200-million (US$239.3-million) plan that represents the city's biggest annual expenditure in public space improvement. VT equipment will be replaced in the mountain neighborhoods of Sarrià-Sant Gervasi, Horta-Guinardó and Nou Barris. The goal is for all escalators to be no more than 20 years old by 2027, and those older than 15 years to have been replaced and upgraded, according to the mayor's office. The city's 55 elevators were used 6.8 million times in 2025, while its 100 escalators were used on 20.9 million occasions.
