The Washington Metrorail Safety Commission has released an audit highlighting significant safety concerns regarding the maintenance and operation of Washington, D.C. Metrorail's nearly 1,000 elevators and escalators, ABC 7 News reports. The audit, which examined inspections, maintenance, operational practices, procedures and training, identified five critical findings that require Metrorail to develop corrective action plans within 30 days: the failure of mechanics to review job hazard analyses as mandated by Metrorail procedures; a lack of proactive equipment monitoring; personnel entering elevator pits with active electrical circuits and standing water; insufficient training on fall protection requirements; and lack of required on-site elevator or escalator certificates. The audit also issued two recommendations: updating incomplete job descriptions for elevator and escalator personnel to reflect current responsibilities and addressing the use of multiple data systems by Metrorail’s Office of Elevators and Escalators Services, which could lead to data management issues and discrepancies.
