UCLA Delays Elevator Inspections

Thirty elevators in buildings belonging to the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) were shown to not be inspected until more than 30 days past the permit expiration dates, Facilities Net reports. Widespread problems with elevators are causing issues in university apartment buildings, as well as classroom and office buildings on UCLA’s campus. The university’s student newspaper, the Daily Bruin checked the permits of more than 80 elevators on the UCLA campus and the Hill, UCLA dorm buildings, between August and November of 2024. The newspaper compared the listed expiration dates with inspection logs provided by UCLA media relations and found that 71 elevators were inspected after the expiration date listed on the permit. While the average time between elevator expiration and third-party inspection was 34 days, the longest period of deferment of updating an elevator’s permit since its state expiration date was 615 days.
