Vertical-transportation (VT) equipment including new elevators and escalators is part of the planned expansion of the Burj Khalifa/Dubai Mall Metro Station in Dubai, Gulf Business is among outlets to report. Dubai’s Roads and Transport Authority is collaborating with Emaar Properties to expand the station to accommodate surging passenger traffic, particularly during events such as New Year’s Eve when passenger traffic surpasses 110,000. Opening in 2010, the station has experienced 7.5% annual ridership growth over the past five years, with long-term growth projected through 2040. The expansion will bring the station’s total area from 6,700 to 8,500 m2, with capacity for 220,000 passengers per day. The upgraded interior will focus on safety, ease of movement, visual connectivity and reduced walking distance.
