Milwaukee is Hiding a Secret Underground Elevator

Hidden underneath a busy Milwaukee, Wisconsin sidewalk lives an underground elevator. Drew Olsen, manager of Major Goolsby’s — the business that the secret elevator is connected to — has been using the freight elevator for the restaurant’s deliveries for years. The 2000-lb capacity elevator has unknown origins, but Olsen told WTIMJ-TV that it has been used by the restaurant since 1972, when Major Goolsby’s took over the building. The elevator is hidden underneath metal doors that sit flush with the sidewalk, until it rises approximately 7 ft through the pavement. “Beer deliveries, food deliveries, CO2 deliveries, you name it. Anything a bar needs we get it; it comes through that elevator,” Olsen said. Bringing deliveries to Major Goolsby’s basement, the elevator has saved the bar and restaurant the hassle of taking packages and kegs up and down the stairs multiple times a day. While the elevator is becoming less of a secret as more people are drawn to its rise through the sidewalk, it remains a somewhat hidden Milwaukee gem.
