On September 20-21, free tours will be offered of the historic East Pillar elevator at Paris’ Eiffel Tower, part of European Heritage Days, PARIS SECRET is among outlets to report. Each year, European Heritage Days, a participatory cultural event organized by the Council of Europe and the European Union, opens doors to places that are usually inaccessible. The machinery of the Eiffel Tower’s historic elevator, organizers observe, represents a “rare opportunity to go behind the scenes of one of the world’s most visited monuments.” The 30-min tours will be guided by a tower technician and take visitors behind the scenes of a “mechanism that continues to fascinate engineers and enthusiasts alike.” The elevator system was designed at the end of the19th century and has since been modernized while staying true to its original principles. Tours are limited to 15 visitors per time slot, and registration, which opens in September, is required. Each tour also includes an ascent to the top of the tower.
