MIA’s Newest Pair of Moving Walks Is 23rd Such Modernization

Miami International Airport (MIA) announced on September 3 it reopened its newest pair of modernized moving walks in Concourse D, marking the 23rd moving walk, elevator or escalator modernization so far this year. The work is part of the airport’s US$9-billion Modernization In Action project, the vertical-transportation (VT) portion of which is being handled by Schindler, which was awarded a 372-unit, five-year contract in 2023. Fifteen additional conveyance units are on track for completion by the end of 2025, putting MIA on track for 38 new or improved pieces of VT equipment this year and setting a new annual modernization record. MIA replaced or modernized 32 conveyance units in 2023 and 2024 combined, and is on pace to more than double its completion rate in 2025. Miami-Dade County Mayor Daniella Levine Cava said more than 95% of VT units are now operational, setting a new record.
