Belleville Public Schools Install Elevators, Become ADA Compliant

The Belleville, New Jersey, Public School System became Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA)-compliant with the installation of elevators at eight of its schools, Essex News Daily reports. The installations were the last part of a districtwide accessibility plan that has been in the works for three years when residents of Belleville voted for a US$48.5-million referendum in 2017 to bring the district’s 10 schools into compliance with ADA regulations. Aside from the eight elevators, ramps were installed, and lighting was ugraded in the schools. A ribbon-cutting ceremony was held on August 2. “In the 22 years I’ve been an administrator, this is probably the most important project I’ve been involved with. We are definitely compliant now and I could not be prouder,” said Superintendent of Schools Richard Tomko.
