The Los Angeles City Council passed a motion to restore elevator service in Cathay Manor, a 16-story apartment building for low-income senior citizens, KFI AM 640 reported on November 23. The building has had inoperable elevators for over a month, causing the owner and operator of the complex to be charged in October by the city attorney’s office with 16 misdemeanors related to the lack of elevator service. Cathay Manor is home to 250 residents, some of whom are disabled. “My paramount concern is for the safety, security and accessibility of our seniors and tenants at Cathay Manor,” said City Councilman Gil Cedillo in a statement after introducing the motion. “It is totally unacceptable to have inoperable elevators.” The motion involved contracting with a qualified elevator repair company to immediately restore elevator service and repair the units.
