Elevator Installations Urged By Shanghai Residents

Although Shanghai targeted for 1,000 new elevators by the end of 2021, members of the city’s aging population are calling for quick installation of more new elevators, Shine reports. Complaints and clamoring are coming from a growing number of these aging residents because they live in older multi-floor buildings without elevators. One Shanghai community, Yingpu, saw the installation of four new elevators in early December. The work was greeted by smiling residents who had been dreaming of having elevators installed. Experts say many of Shanghai’s residential buildings lag behind newer structures, and urgently need elevators. One local resident, 65, had been living in her apartment for more than 20 years. As she got older, the sixth-story resident found it increasingly difficult to climb stairs. With the recent work, “I am very happy about the elevator, and look forward to its early completion and operation,” she said — a viewpoint shared by many of her neighbors. This and other projects in Shanghai are seen by many as a great improvement.
