Detroit-based developer Sterling Group is preparing a high-rise, multi-residential complex at the site of the former Joe Louis Arena, The Detroit News reports. The project will offer studio and one-bedroom units, according to plans the developer previously submitted. Heavy-duty equipment recently appeared at the site at 600 Civic Center Drive. Signs on-site list the work being undertaken by Macomb Township-based Colasanti Construction Services, Inc. A permit recently issued by the City of Detroit says work will involve site preparation and foundations for a 25-story multi-family tower. A separate permit for construction will be issued later. Submitted plans show the project will feature about 500 apartments, with sizes ranging from 259 ft2 to 772 ft2. Joe Louis Arena opened in 1979 and was a popular sports-event hall. It was closed in 2017 and demolished in 2019-20.
