Just two days after implementing a requirement that those maintaining vertical transportation (VT) buy civil liability insurance, a parliamentary committee of the Government of Macau removed it from the proposed Elevator and Escalator Safety Legal System bill, Macau Daily Times reported on March 25. The reason? Such insurance is not available in Hong Kong or mainland China, according to committee President Ella Lei, who said the aim of the requirement was to cover elevator and escalator maintainers’ liability should the equipment malfunction and be deemed the cause of accidents. With the provision removed, it is up to property owners whether or not to purchase civil liability insurance.
