NEII Provides Code Development Updates, Recent Adoptions

National Elevator Industry, Inc. (NEII) provided code development updates and announced recent code adoptions in West Virginia and North Carolina in its latest NEII Insider newsletter. Group B Committee action hearings were held in March and April to review proposed changes to international existing building code, residential code and structural requirements, and committee actions have been posted on the International Code Council (ICC) website. Public comments on these are due by June 20. Group A code changes, which include Chapter 30 on elevators, were completed in 2021. On the ICC A117.1 Standard for Accessible and Usable Buildings and Facilities, the A117 committee is meeting virtually every two weeks to review proposed revisions for the next cycle, with a goal to complete the work for publication by the end of 2023. The 2022 edition of ASME A17/CSA B44 is scheduled for publication in the fourth quarter of this year. Recent code adoptions include West Virginia adopting 2021 I-Codes and 2021 National Fire Protection Association fire codes, effective August 1, and North Carolina adopting amendments to the International Building Code that impact smoke doors/curtains used in elevator lobbies.
