Six New Escalators Part of US$4.2 Million N.C. Airport Investment

Six new escalators to replace units that are approximately 40 years old are part of millions of U.S. dollars in upgrades underway at the Piedmont International Airport in Guilford County, North Carolina, CBS News 2 reports. Kevin Baker, executive director of the facility west of Greensboro, tells the source US$4.2 million will go toward new terminal doors and escalators, and an additional US$2 million will be spent on bathroom upgrades. Replacing doors and escalators together makes sense, he observes, since “without the doors, [workers] are unable to get the large escalators into the building.” Other upgrades underway at the airport include refurbishing its two runways and replacing the control tower with one more than twice the height of the original. A major area employer, the airport is growing.
