Two-hundred seventy-three vertical-transportation (units) — 162 escalators and 111 lifts — are coming to the 82-km Regional Rapid Transit System (RRTS) high-speed rail corridor traveling through Delhi, Ghaziabad and Meerut in India, Hindustan Times reports. The National Capital Region Transport Corp. (NCRTC) has let contracts for the VT equipment, which will serve 25 stations, most of which are three to floor levels. The RRTS project is on track for commissioning in March 2025, with a 17-km priority stretch in Ghaziabad set to open in March 2023. At the five stations in that stretch, 36 escalators and 26 lifts are being installed. An NCRTC official said escalators are being manufactured in Pune and lifts in Bengaluru. Escalators will boast energy-saving and safety features such as skirt guards to prevent the entrapment of clothing. Escalator handrails will be outfitted with finger guards and automatic safety systems including anti-reversal and overspeed devices.
