One of New Zealand’s Longest Escalators Part of New CRL Station

Matt L., a contributor to GreaterAuckland.org, said he recently toured the under-construction City Rail Link (CRL) Karanga-a-hape station in Auckland, New Zealand, and was impressed by its size and vertical-transportation features, including what will be one of New Zealand’s fastest and longest escalators at 40 m. Looking down into the construction shaft at the Beresford Street entrance, he said, gives an idea of the station’s depth: at 33 m, it will be the equivalent of an approximately eight-story building. From the entrance, passengers will take escalators down several floors to a ticket hall. Serving the Karangahape Road area with entrances on Beresford Square and Mercury Lane, the station is set to open in 2024, according to Wikipedia. Matt L. called it “our only real underground station — as opposed to subsurface stations like at Britomart, Te Waihorotiu and a few others.”
