Champion Elevator Corp., with corporate offices in Manhattan, NYC, announced it secured an elevator service contract for 209 units at the Parkchester residential complex in the Bronx. Described as a planned “city within a city,” Parkchester opened in 1940 on 129 beautifully landscaped acres. Although it’s had its ups and downs, its rich (and sometimes controversial) history includes having the second Macy’s department store in the world. It continues to be a place where one can shop, work and live without leaving the premises. Parkchester is composed of 171, four-sided brick buildings, either eight or 13 stories. Dual elevators positioned side-by-side serve the 13-story buildings, and single elevators serve the eight-story buildings. Parkchester has a total residential population of more than 30,000 and a population density of more than 120,000 people per mi2.
