Escalators Reopen at One of Manhattan’s Deepest Subway Stations

On April 6, subway riders applauded the reopening of escalators serving one of NYC’s deepest subway stations: the 181st Street A train station in Upper Manhattan, PIX 11 is among outlets to report. Work began in May 2022 and lasted nearly a year, requiring passengers using one entrance to take more than 80 stairs up or down. The project is part of what the Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) has described as “the most ambitious accessibility program in MTA history, with US$5.2 million to make 67 stations accessible — more than the previous three capital programs combined.”  MTA awarded accessibility contracts for work at 13 stations in 2022, and work is currently underway at 34 stations throughout the subway system.
