Farmington, Connecticut-headquartered global OEM Otis recently highlighted an effort that involved more than 180 Otis volunteers and more than 230 students from 15 countries and territories brainstorming ways to mitigate climate change. Part of Otis’ third year of its Made to Move CommunitiesTM global student challenge, the effort was illustrated by four stories from mentors tasked with helping students use STEM, or science, technology, engineering and math, concepts to solve problems. Mentors included Tyler B., a regional sales manager for Otis Chicago, who helped students conceive a windmill and solar panel technology system to provide light and heating to bus stop waiting areas; Toshiharu T. of Nippon Otis in Tokyo, who helped students develop a plan to help vehicle drivers mitigate inconveniences caused by heavy snowfall; Kelvin Z of Otis China, who helped conceive a mobility solution that repurposes wasted energy; and Sonia Susana E. of Otis Europe, Middle East and Africa, who helped create an app that shows sustainable public-transit mobility options in local communities.
