VDMA: German Robotics and Automation Sector Projects Record Year

Representing more than 3,500 German and European mechanical and plant engineering companies, VDMA Robotics + Automation says the sector is on track for another record year. The industry forecasts a 13% increase in sales to EUR16.2 billion (US$17.6 billion) in 2023, following a 5% sales increase in 2022 to EUR14.3 billion (US$15.6 billion). “The previous turnover record of EUR15.1 billion (US$16.4 billion) from 2018 is likely to be significantly exceeded in 2023,” VDMA Chairman Frank Konrad observes. The current robotics and automation market is characterized by full order books, as suppliers built up large backlogs during the pandemic. Germany looks to a future in which robotics and automation play key roles in both manufacturing and service, which today generate more than 70% of Germany’s GDP. “Service robotics are urgently needed here to remain productive despite staff shortages,” according to VDMA. “Lab automation provides a good example of the potential for robot applications
