US$11.5-Million Elevator Project at San Francisco’s Castro Muni Station Set To Begin

Construction on a long-awaited, four-stop elevator at the Castro San Francisco Municipal Railway (Muni) station in the city’s LGBTQ District is set to start in early July, The Bay Area Reporter reports. The city’s public works department gave a notice to proceed to general contractor CLW Builders Inc. on June 20, noting a site survey would take place first, followed by installation of construction fencing, sound barriers and landscape protection before work begins in earnest ahead of a targeted 2026 completion. San Francisco Metropolitan Transportation Authority built the station and leases it to Muni. The centerpiece of a US$11.5-million project, the glass-and-steel elevator will provide an alternative to the elevator across the street from Castro station’s main entrance. The project includes further upgrades to Harvey Milk Plaza — named for the city’s first gay supervisor who represented the Castro — including new light fixtures and sparkle-grain concrete.
