The Gherkin and Walkie Talkie buildings in London’s Square Mile look to soon get a neighbor with City of London Corp. officials approving plans for a 284-m-tall, 63-story skyscraper at 55 Bishopsgate, CITY A.M. is among outlets to report. The tower would be the third tallest in the city. Designed by Arney Fender Katsalidis and funded by investment firm Schroeders, the GBP600-million (US$771.5 million) plan will offer 100,000 m2 of office space, 22 stories of mixed-use space and a free-to-the public rooftop area with a 360° viewing platform. The source observed the plan is “said to be sustainable and central to the city’s ‘Climate Action Strategy,’ with the use of highly efficient renewable technology.” Historic preservationists, who fear the tower will affect its surroundings including 18th- and 19th-century buildings, expressed disappointment in the decision. Construction could start as early as 2024.
