The installation of five new elevators at the Alameda station on the Lisbon Metro in Portugal recently began, The Portugal News reports. In a statement, Metropolitano de Lisboa said that the elevator installation, which is set to improve accessibility throughout the station, should be complete by the end of the year. According to the company, the five elevators at the Alameda station are 23 years old, and the average life expectancy of similar equipment is around 25 years. The elevators will be replaced in phases with modern and “resistant” equipment. The construction and installation work on the new elevators will allow access between the surface and the platform. In August, Metropolitano de Lisboa announced a total investment of EUR13.75 million (U$S14.7 million) in the modernization, access and replacement of escalators and elevators at stations. The Lisbon Metro has 117 elevators, 234 escalators and 10 moving walkways throughout its network.
