India’s Uttar Pradesh Legislative Assembly was set to introduce a bill on February 6 making it mandatory to obtain permission from the Energy Department before installing any lifts and will require the annual servicing of elevators to maintain safety standards, Law Trend reports. Additionally, the bill says that elevators must have emergency alarms and CCTV cameras. This initiative by Utter Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath government comes in the wake of several elevator accidents in the state, particularly in high-rise buildings in Noida. “Ensuring the safety of elevators is of utmost importance. It is essential to strictly adhere to the prescribed procedures for the construction, quality, safety features, installation, operation, and maintenance of elevators and escalators,” he said, noting the absence of laws ensuring compliance in these matters. Additionally, he proposed that every building owner who installs an elevator should be required to register it and that elevator installation should comply with building codes and other guidelines.
