Stakeholders in the building industry have resolved that elevator safety standards must be strictly followed to prevent negative occurrences in the industry, the Nigerian Tribune reports. This resolution was part of the communiqué issued at the end of the Equipment Safety Workshop for the Year 2024 held in Lagos and themed: “Safety Compliance in the Elevator and Vertical Equipment Industry.” Lanre Mojola, director-general of the Lagos Safety Commission, stated that the workshop aimed to enhance safety standards and foster compliance within the vertical-transportation sector. Mojola emphasized that, “with rapid urbanization and technological advancement, the registration of lifts, regulation and enforcement of safety standards in line with best practices in the sector cannot be compromised.” In the keynote address, Olugbenga Oyerinde, the state commissioner for Special Duties and Intergovernmental Relations, noted that a strong occupational safety and health culture is not just a goal but a fundamental necessity in any workplace. He asserted that accidents, injuries and fatalities can be prevented through a collective commitment to safety management. Other presentations offered guidance on how to address these issues and elevate safety standards.
