East London Tower Height Increase Approved

Developer Chalegrove Properties received approval from the Department for Levelling Up, Housing and Communities for its proposals to increase the height of 225 Marsh Wall on the Isle of Dogs in east London to 56 stories – a plan rejected by Tower Hamlets Council in 2022, Building Design reports. The development is now being marketed as One Thames Quay. The developer originally received consent for a 49-story version of the scheme at appeal in 2018 after its initial 56-story designs were reduced in height and rejigged. Tower Hamlets rejected the application on the grounds that it would “harm the character and distinctiveness” of the Canary Wharf townscape and damage the Canary Wharf Skyline of Strategic Importance, but Planning Inspector John Braithwaite found that extending the skyscraper would have no adverse impact on the character and distinctiveness of the tall building zone.
