Sound Transit in Seattle plans to replace 58 aging vertical-transportation (VT) units with new elevators and escalators, KING 5 is among outlets to report. Upgrades target four downtown stations: the Chinatown-International District, Pioneer Square, West and Symphony stations. The VT units at these stations are more than 35 years old — “well past their retirement age,” the source observed. Sound Transit officials said the project is set to be complete in 2033, with one elevator or escalator being replaced at a time and zero major station closures. The first round of replacements will take place at the Chinatown-International District station starting in December and is expected to wrap up by May 2026 ahead of the FIFA World Cup.
