Delays in Elevator Registration in India

Nearly two months after the Uttar Pradesh government in India introduced the Lift and Escalator Rules, 2024, for elevator safety, none of the 80,000 lifts across 350 Noida high-rise building have been registered, Prop News Time reports. The legislation passed in February and was notified in September to mandate registration, maintenance and safety checks for elevators and escalators. The source reports that confusion among residents and Apartment Owners Associations (AOAs) has caused the delay. Officials have assured stakeholders that detailed instructions and timelines will be shared, as many said they were unaware the process had begun. The Times of India reports the administration announced on October 29 that building owners and Resident Welfare Associations (RWAs) have six months to register their units. Non-compliance can result in fines and suspension of services.
